Hospital 3 Day Diet - Birmingham Hospital Diet Review
Notwithstanding the uncertainty of its origins, there is little doubt that this simple diet plan has become widespread and that many people have used it, often coming across the weight loss strategy under one of its many names. Apart from the Hospital 3 Day Diet, it is also known as Alabama 3 Day Diet, 3 day Tuna Diet, Tuna Fish Diet, 3 Day Cardiac Diet, and others.

The content of these weight loss diet plans is very similar and will here be treated as essentially the same.
A key element of the Hospital 3 Day Diet is that it contains a low daily calorie level of about 1,000 calories with specified ingredients to provide the protein, carbohydrates, fat (very little) and other nutrients that we need to survive. For a full description of the menu plan, do a quick search for my article "3 Day Tuna Fish Diet - Menu and Diet Plan".
In brief, the plan outlines the foods to be included for breakfast, lunch and dinner over a three day period.
There are many reports of weight reduction from those who have followed the diet. The amount of claimed weight lost during that time varies, as might be expected with so many differing metabolisms and food requirements being involved. However, a minimum weight reduction of at least 2.5 lbs does seem attainable and likely.
Much of the weight loss from a diet of such a short duration probably comes from water loss. As well, with a calorie count of about 1,000 this would be well below normal requirements for most adults, so energy expended would also account for some of the loss.
However, whilst not a 'starvation diet', the Birmingham Hospital Diet is likely to generate user problems if continued beyond the recommended 3 days. For instance, it is normal for our bodies to make adjustments when a food shortage is detected. This is a survival mechanism which protects us when little food is available, as in times of famine. The body slows metabolism and conserves fat stores to enable us to survive longer with less food. This actually makes it harder to lose weight, we have less energy and tire more easily. Not a satisfactory long term condition!
Although there may be some short-term loss advantage, the feelings of hunger experienced by the end of the diet encourage extra food intake after the diet has been completed. A better alternative is a program that does not produce a craving for food, does not cause the body to slow its activities, and takes into account nutritional requirements so that changes in eating habits would allow fat loss to happen over a longer period and be lasting.
Rather than following a simple, low calorie diet plan, losing weight over an extended period allows other tactics to be employed in the plan, such as 'calorie shifting', placing greater emphasis on fat loss and adequate nutrition. This is more likely in the long run to provide health benefits and sustainable weight loss.

One of my favorite fillings for a baked potato includes, low fat cottage cheese, red pepper and carrot. My dicing the red pepper and carrot, and mixing it with the low fat cottage cheese, you can turn bland cottage cheese into sweet crunchy potato filling.
These are just some ways of using the potato, to lose weight. I have used this weight loss program many times in the past couple of years, to shed those extra pounds. I have also implemented many other diet programs into my daily routine too.

What Makes Medifast Bars Work So Well?: Protein bars have come a long way since they first came out. The initial offerings were chalky, crumbly, and well, sometimes just plain nasty tasting. But, most of the bars today have become chewy, decent textured and tasty. Most of the manufacturers have wised up and added decadent flavors like peanut butter and chocolate. For dieters, a good bar can be an easy sell because these little snacks are so convenient and some are actually good for you.

Notice I said some, not all. Many of the grocery store offerings are very high in calories. Some of them are also high in carbs. And, this is the exact reason that most just don't give you the same results. Below, I'll compare two popular grocery store bars with the real bars, but I will say now that most of these aren't going to get you in ketosis or fat burning mode because the calorie content is simply too high.

Comparing Medifast Bars To Grocery Store Bars Like Atkins And Snickers: First up, the Atkins bars. I'm going to be comparing the Advantage peanut butter bar. This one has a whopping 240 calories, with 108 of them being from fat. These have twelve grams of fat and they provide 30% of the daily recommendations of calcium and 25% of the recommended daily amount of vitamins C and A. The carbohydrate content is 22.
Now, I'll look at the Medifast peanut butter version. This one has 140 calories. This is 100 calories less, which in terms of ketosis can be quite significant. These have two less carbs than the Atkins version (at 20.) There is only 4 grams of fat. The vitamin and mineral list is quite long here. These have at least 25% (and often more) of the recommended requirements for vitamins A, D, C, K, B, B6, B12 as well as a long list of others (24 total, to be exact.) Nutrition wise, these are head and shoulders above the Atkins.
Snickers Marathon Energy Bars: Well, the name here might tip you off a bit as this manufacturer makes candy bars. But, let's look at the calories first. It has a whopping 210 calories, which is not as high as Atkins but is still much higher than Medifast. There are 8 grams of fat in these, which is quite a bit, but not as much as Atkins. Where this one really rings warning bells for me is that it has a whopping 26 grams of carbohydrates. There are 16 vitamins and minerals listed on the label. Again, this is better than some of the others, but not great either.
You also want to take a look at how the ingredients are listed. Most of these bars will have high fructose corn syrup somewhere in the front. The real bars have protein listed as the first ingredient. Hopefully, this article has shown you that although these grocery store bars may work in a pinch, they don't begin to have low enough calories or the nutritional content to work in the long term or to put you in ketosis. Most of them are not cheap either. In my humble opinion, you're much better off ordering the real deal from the company, which does allow you to order the bars individually if you chose to.

The Dukan diet is broken up into four sections or phases: the attack phase, the cruise phase, the consolidation phase and the stabilization phase. The diet isn't easy and requires some discipline but if you do stick with it, you can lose weight quickly. The Dukan Diet isn't a quick fix plan - it's a plan for life. Dukan focuses heavily on maintenance, getting through that critical period where most people gain back any weight they've lost through quick crash diets.
During the attack phase of the diet, you eat only protein. The focus on protein seems like the Atkin's plan. However, in contrast to the Atkin's plan, this isn't fatty protein with butter and as much fat as you like. Fat is to be trimmed off of beef and other meats, skin to be removed from the chicken. The attack phase or first portion of the diet can be done for one to ten days, depending on how much weight you need to lose. To lose more weight quickly, continue this attack first phase of the diet for as long as necessary.
The second phase of the Dukan diet is the cruise phase. You will continue to lose weight during this phase but not at the rate you did in the first phase. You will be alternating your protein-only days with protein and vegetable days. Avoiding starchy vegetables is important - most green vegetables can be eaten without restriction during this period on vegetable days. During the cruise phase of the Dukan diet, you can expect to lose about 2 pounds per week. You stay in this phase alternating protein and protein/vegetable days until you've reached your weight loss goal. If you want to lose weight quickly, stay in the attack phase for a longer time before starting this second phase of the diet. Then, continue the cruise phase until you reach your weight loss goal.
The consolidation phase is the third part of of the Dukan Diet. It is this period that Dr. Dukan says is the critical period where most dieters gain back weight they have lost. During this phase, you can add back in limited amounts of breads, cheese, pasta and other foods you love in moderation. Eat lean protein and vegetables every day. You can add in one serving of fruit per day as well as limited portions of whole grains and dairy. Dukan advises five days of this third phase for every pound of weight you have lost. You don't continue to lose weight in this phase so if you wanted to lose more weight. On the Dukan Diet, it is advised that you do low impact exercise such as a walk for 25 minutes each day.
The fourth phase or stabilization of the Dukan diet is your maintenance plan for life. In this phase, no foods are forbidden but one day each week, you eat only protein. You won't lose weight doing this but it will help you to maintain by balancing out the food during the rest of your week. Similar to the attack phase, during the protein days of the diet, avoid fats and chicken skin and avoid sauces.
